Caught in the downpour

Harsh drops relentlessly

Beat against the shield that is the window-pane

Protected, warm, we refuse to fall or capitulate

Flashing lightning strives to shock us

But our toughened hearts resist and

Throw back hope in retaliation

Howling wind slows our advance

But we refuse to retreat, to fall back and admit defeat

The trees sing and dance their approval

Our wobbling, thin, emaciated legs dig into the earth in seeking purchase

And the strength to keep fighting

Thinning clouds and the blue sky

Reveal our distress to the world

And signal our cry for help

Somewhere, I know, we are heard
